history: David was born in LA and lived a very normal life (as normal as is possible in LA). He went to school, he worked part time, he partied, he studied, he loved, he lost. Right around the time of his twentieth birthday he developed what his doctors call "an inexplicable and possibly unique" sleep disorder. Every so often, and following no discernable pattern, David will leave REM sleep and enter an unusual state of being. His brainwave activity suggests that he is, for all intents and purposes, awake, and yet he remains unconscious and in fact completely oblivious to external stimuli. He invariably wakes up in a cold sweat, out of breath and with a deep sense of forboading. He remembers flashes of some horrible nightmare, always in crystal clear detail, but never the entire dream. David has yet to encounter anyone who can explain to him why this happens, and he's long since stopped looking for answers. He has accepted the occasional near sleepless night and continues in his daily routine, working on his PhD in political science and working as a system administrator for a law firm.

Sanada has no memory of his life before the Temple took him in. The Temple of the Path towards Truth is a centuries old order on an isolated island in the Japanese archipelago. Its goal is for its members to help each other attain enlightenment through the improvement of the mind, the body, and the spirit, and the interconnection of all three. There are few who are even aware of the order's existance, and of those, no one outside the order knows anymore than that. Sanada was orphaned at birth and adopted by a member of the order. He has lived his entire life there, following the Path. He improves his mind through study and discussion with his peers, his body through the study of various martial arts, and his spirit through intense meditation. It was in meditation that Sanada received a message, an external feeling that enveloped him completely. The content of this message, though not expressed in words, can best be described by the following sentence: Find and protect David Pope.

The only item of importance that Sanada took with him is his sword. It looks like any samurai sword save for the Kangi engraved into the blade and on the hilt.

Sanada has attained a state of being that can only be attained through a lifetime of disciplined practices, both physical and spiritual. He is in peak physical condition and has reflexes far beyond those of most mortal men. He is a master of martial arts, including many lost techniques that involve the focusing of one's "chi." Among other things, this allows him to absorb an astonishing amount of physical punishment, as well as inflict an equally astonishing amount on others, should he so choose. When fully focused, Sanada can withstand virtually any attack of mortal strength with a blunt weapon, can punch a whole in a brick wall, and can lift nearly five hundred pounds.

player: I've never played a game like this before but I am a huge fan of all things Joss Whedon touches, and I need a creative outlet in my life. I've been thinking about my character's arc for a while now and have his introduction already figured out. It involves another character that I would like to play as well. I'm not sure how much flexibility is given on the "one character per player" rule. These two characters will be closely intertwined and virtually never apart from the moment I introduce them. I have included both characters in this application. David Pope is the main character and the stories will be told from his perspective, Sanada is a secondary character. Yeah I like quite a fair bit actually.
From what he says, I guess one of chars will be his PC and the other will be a semi-NPC.

Yeah Matt, it sounds very much to me like David Pope will be the PC and Sanada will be a major NPC, controlled pretty much exclusively by this guy. I have to say, I'm intrigued by the concept behind this, and I'm fascinated to learn more about David's odd dream-state and how Sanada is involved - and of course, what's really behind it all. :)
This is definitely an original idea for the game (despite the Dreaming - this seems different), and while I'm not yet sure how it's going to fit in with the rest of us in LA, I'm sure 'X' (I couldn't see a name on the submission, but that's not unusual - if he's accepted I'm sure we'll get one) has some ideas in that direction or he wouldn't have submitted to join the game.

Strange formatting but yeah I like what's written here. What's more the applicant seems like they already have idea of what they want to write about which means at least they won't be a non-starter.
