descript: Ash has dark brown (almost black) hair which complements his dark coloured fashion sense. He dresses from head to toe in dark colours - he has little in the way of light coloured clothing.
He has grey eyes, but has taken to wearing green tinted contact lenses.
He measures a less-than-majestic 5'9" but makes up for lack of height in his feisty personality. He is a people oriented person who believes above all other things in the power of friendship. To him, there is no greater power.
Ash can also often be seen wearing a necklace of a pentagram in a nod to his Wiccan beliefs.
history: Ash was born and raised in Bath, England in a suitably middle-class family upbringing. He went through his younger years a loner. He did not make friends easily, and didn't even want to. He left secondary school with above-average qualifications and went straight to a Scottish college to study Sociology. Life was pretty normal. Until he met Eve.
Having had to move up to Scotland due to the impracticality of having to travel back and forth to England every day, Ash was in need of accommodation. Something that wasn't too expensive. So he decided, against all that he had ever been, to look for a roommate to help ease living costs. And this is where Eve came in.
Eve made an immediate impression on Ash. From the US (Los Angeles to be precise) she stood out from the rest of the applicants. She was friendly, talkative, popular, pretty... all things he had never felt the need to have or do in his life. For some reason though, Eve broke through the barriers he had put up for all those years, and succeeded in making a friend of Ash. Having moved in, she revealed to Ash her Wiccan lifestyle, which fascinated a skeptical Ash. Ash soon got involved in Eve's workings and she made a believer of the young man. She taught him all she knew of magicks, the religion of Wicca and really made him aware that the world was a much more complex place than most people were prepared to see.
Two years on, Ash and Eve had become inseparable. Eve had turned around Ash's life completely. He now had friends, a social life, a new image, a new outlook - and most of all, he had Eve. Their closeness was so that it surpassed even the bond of brother and sister. They were soul-mates. And although both had feelings for the other that went way beyond the platonic-love they shared, neither was prepared to cross that boundary for fear of losing the other.
Then suddenly, with no explanation, Eve disappeared. The only things missing were her passport and some clothes. There was no note. She had abandoned Ash. His devastation threatened to ruin him, but the strength he had gained through his friendship with Eve had gave him the will to go on.
Months passed, and still no word was heard of from Eve. Ash was faced with the possibility that perhaps she wasn't coming back. But he wouldn't accept this - even after all this time, Ash still lived for Eve. He decided to pack up and leave his education and new life behind him and caught the next flight to the only place he could think of looking for Eve. Home. LA...
items: Ash's only belongings are various herbs and magickal tools, spell books and pieces of lore on Wicca and magick.
powers: Ash's main power stems from his extensive study into Wiccan magick with Eve. He is capable of performing some minor and more advanced magicks, but is still only an intermediate when it comes it and so isn't quite prepared for the most powerful of magicks.

I for one welcome Kevin and his Ash Crowley. I'm surprised, with a name like Crowley, he isn't a member of the Golden Dawn. Wicca almost seems to Hedge magic for that name.
But I thought the profile was cleanly written, and I wouldn't mind seeing more. Maybe he'll give that stuck up Kate a run for her money. :wink:
(P.S. and with a name like "Ash" he's got to be tough. Ever see Evil Dead? Of course you have.)

Please don't think I am being critical becasue I'm not. But LA By Night
is a different mix of characters than Mythic and we are trying to be
careful about not having too much of one thing or another.
I like this character. It has potential as an ongoing NPC perhaps, but
we have Kate, Daye and Jade and Sorrow to fill the roles of
spellcasters. Alicenoko has magic as well (although of a different type)
What makes Ash stand out from these other casters? He's a neophyte
which is differnt and gives him room to learn. But thats all I saw.
Can you come up wth something else to make him unique or give him a
special niche to fill.
Young man, Loner, lost love. All good details but also common. Is
there something in his past that stands out? Is he an artist? A
Musician? Perhaps a collector of some kind. We are looking for unique
I think Ash is well written and is worthy of consideration on those
grounds alone. Charaacter traits and personality sometime emerge during
game play rather than in the design stage.
Expect more commentary from other players too! You'll know something in
a few days about whether Ash is accepted!

I also like the sound of Ash ... except I think the name could be awfully confusing with Tash. 8O I'm on CU and Dave was saying what Sid had written, but I was hearing "But I liked Tash." So that might become an issue...
And yes, we do already have a fair number of spellcasters... but I also do feel that characters that may look similar on paper turn out to be quite different once they get into play. I can remember being concerned about Sorrow's profile when Robin first applied. But of course, he's turned out to be a very unique character.
And frankly, I'm impressed with the couple of pieces Kevin has written for Atys in Mythic. :) I'd be more than happy to see him in LABN.

Ok I like this one.
The background is clearly presented (what there is of it , I'll come on to that later). Kevin obviously has a story he wants to tell which is always a plus and the idea that one of our characters introduction to the occult was actually beneficial and non-traumatic is quite refreshing...
Although as others have said we have four spellcasters of various abilty already in the group not including Sam who's having magical knowledge downloaded into his brain by Mother Mariah, Jessica who seems to dabble (as any good watcher should :) ) or Tash who recently acquired a sizeable well indexed database on Voodoo ( :wink: @ Heather). I don't think this should be a reason for excluding the character. The list above show's that it's perfectly possible to have a large number of magic users in the group without stepping on anyone's toes and without repeating storyline ideas.
As for the lack of detail in the character I have to admit that my application was pretty sparse in terms of detail but that didn't mean I didn't know a lot more about the character than I was saying at the time.
Ok assuming you made it past all that babble. My responce is yes let Kevin play in the sand box...

Okay, seeing your point! The whole spellcasting thing comes from an
obsession with power that I seem to have! :)
I've been thinking and perhaps it would be beneficial to dump the whole
magick thing. This way he can be a Xander-esque character who has no real
power in the widely accepted definition of the word, which I personally see
as beneficial in terms of character development because this leaves him open
to more or less any path. It also brings the question "what is power?" to
the character, in that he will constantly be looking for the power, the
special thing, about himself that everyone else around him seems to have
quite naturally.
I am a little reluctant to scrap the whole Eve thing, but I could quite
easily take the Wicca aspects away from her and replace them with something
a little more original and non-magickal which Ash could strive towards.
Anyway, thats just some thoughts I had upon reading your message. I'll
think a bit more and let you know.

Actually I quite dig the new perspective given by Kevin, it show's he's really thought about what he wants from his character. Thinking of all the characters with magical powers it does seem kind of stale to bring another one into the fold (not that I'd mind, Ash looks like an interesting character) But I'd love to see someone take a character down a different route. Way to go!

firstly, appologies for not keeping up with this post, SATs tommorow (aghghghghgh!!!!) but nothin can keep me away from LABN..... anywayz, about Ash, reading his profile i have to say he has really worked hard on it.
I thought the prospect of having someone new would most likely be something like the logan/zayn case (i am still sad over those two losing interest :( ), but in this case Kevin seems to be really in it, and hopefully he won't lose interest if he gets in.
I really like Ash, but think if he were to be changed just slightly so to have something different, maybe even add a sense of suspense to the character, you know......a sense of extra thrill that even though his character story is somewhat known to us it will still be somewhat different.....
ok, hopefully ppl undersand what i have said, ok...if anyone does understand it please explain to me what i have said, cause i have no clue......must be the SATs....i'll go to sleep now me thinks........

I'd imagine that if Kevin is anything like the rest of us, there's a fair chunk of character story/personality traits which don't appear in this write up. The trick with writing up a character profile is to put in enough to give people an idea what the character's all about, without giving away all their deep, dark secrets. :)

descript: Tyler is 6'0" and weighs in at roughly 190 lbs.(give or take ten pounds.) He is chiseled in his physique, obviously a fitness nut. As such, he looks at least three years younger than he is.
His hair is dark brown, shoulder length, and always wet, for some reason. His eyes are the same shade of brown, but always look simultaneously deadly and exhausted.
Even stranger is that he seems to have burned off his own fingerprints, and carries no ID of any kind.
Usually, he is in black slacks and some dark shaded work shirt. Over that he wears a brown jacket, which falls to just below his buttocks. He has that on at all times, regardless of the weather.
history: Tyler Hyatt was born in a military hospital just outside of Dallas. That moment turned out to be the last time he would be certain he was with his mother. She disappeared, long before he was old enough to know anything about her.
His father was, at the time of Tyler’s birth, forty-five years old. He had made a life out of the military, and brought the values that life instilled into him to his home, treating Tyler like a young soldier, and playing a drill sergeant, rather than a father. And it only got worse when Tyler turned five, and Omar Hyatt was dishonorably discharged from the Army, on the back of a drunk and disorderly charge.
Roughly a year later, Omar was a limo driver, and he and his son were living in the ghetto. Picture that, if you would. You white army brat in the poor neighborhoods. His was the only white face. This is how Tyler Hyatt’s life began. He attended the poorest school in his neighborhood, and was driven to excel by his father’s torment.
It worked. Tyler graduated from high school two years early, and was something of a child prodigy. But, that same year, Omar was responsible for the death of a woman for whom he was driving, and was sent to prison. So college, and any thoughts of that nature, quickly became a pipe dream for Tyler Hyatt, as he had to set himself to keeping himself alive. For the next two years, from ages sixteen to eighteen, Tyler held a variety of jobs, from hot dog vender to construction worker.
Two days after his eighteenth birthday, Tyler joined the Army, for a sense of stability. It worked. He’d found his calling. In 1994, after compiling an exceptional, if unspectacular service record, Tyler completed Special Forces training. He continued his run of exceptional, but not eye catching, performance. Over this same period, Tyler met and married a woman named Kelly Dennis. Together, they adopted a nine-year-old boy, by the name of Shawn.
That is, until his unit was sent into Zaire in 2000. While on assignment, Tyler and six other men were attacked by a gang of vamps. After some crafty thinking, quick escapes, and the expending of massive amounts of ammunition, Tyler emerged as the only survivor. His comrades were drained.
After the incident, a man named Collin Braddock approached Tyler. Collin explained, in the shortest, most unspecific fashion possible, that he worked for the government and that he had a proposal for Tyler. Tyler responded, with interest. Over the course of the next two days, Tyler learned of MJ12, and it’s current purpose. In addition, he was exposed to more of the demon world than most people can guess.
At the end of those two days, Collin made his pitch:
“This world, this system, our very way of life, ceases to operate when power runs unchecked. And everything we are dies with that way of life. We become nothing more than the things we fought against, as this nation built itself.
When the other worldly element was first brought to President Truman’s attention, he created MJ-12 to act as it’s check. And he was praised. But there was a reason that was never announced, Tyler.
Can you imagine the reaction to the very idea that such a group exists, much less controls the flow of information, and thus free thought, as they do?
There are those of us within the government who believe this has gone on long enough. We’ve watched, as MJ-12 started to lose control, and took more and more drastic measures to maintain the cover. This isn’t going to last. Sooner or later, one of them is going to crack. What then?
Mj-12 was the check for this otherworldly element. It’s high time to restore the balance.
That is what my organization is, Tyler. We are the Balance. We keep watch over the Majestics, keep them in check. When one steps out of line, we deal with it. And what’s more, we take care of everything they miss.
And they never know it.”
The pitch was successful. Tyler joined The Balance, and spent the next three years busting “other worldly” dust. And it was here he excelled. It seemed he had a knack for working in total secrecy. In 2002, Tyler was even given a young man to mentor, teach the business to. The young man’s name was Ryan Michaels.
The next year, it all came tumbling down.
In January of 2003, Tyler and Ryan were sent to San Francisco for a clean up job just outside the city. They were to clean a warehouse. Upon their arrival, however, a gang of vamps attacked the pair. They escaped, splitting up in the Tenderloin. They were to meet up at the ferry to Alcatraz. But Ryan never made it. Tyler assumed him dead.
However, on the day he went to tell Ryan’s mother, Gloria, the young man’s only remaining family, Tyler found his former ward sucking on the woman’s neck. After a brief battle, Michaels escaped into the night, carrying an heirloom of his grandmother, a three century old Katana.
That week, waiting in Braddock’s office to discuss the problem, Tyler happened upon a file. Inside was a report on Michaels, stating that he was set to blow the whole thing wide open. MJ-12, The Balance, demons, all of it. And as such, he and Tyler had been set up.
The rage Tyler felt was only natural. And with that rage, he chose to disappear, go deep underground. So deep, his ex-comrades could not track him. He singed off his fingerprints, and erased any record of his own existence, and well as Ryan’s. Tyler vowed to bring it all into the open, The Balance, MJ-12, everything. But to do that, he needed proof, more than he had.
And there was one other order of business. Tyler had to, as he might put it, “silence Gloria’s ghost.” And that meant dusting his former pupil.
So, Tyler has spent the past year tracking Ryan. He moves from place to place, staying under the radar of his former associates, who seek to shut him up, and MJ-12, who’ve never known he existed, searching. He sustains himself through various odd jobs, and donations of bodily fluids. And now, on a tip from a wounded M’Fashnik, Tyler has come to LA…

In addition, his ride into town included a bag which held two devices which Tyler wears on his arms whenever he knows he's walking into trouble. With a press of a button, these devices shoot two eighteen inch long knives(if you can call them that) into his hands. They're not the most intimidating weapon in the world, but in the hands of a properly trained individual(ie Tyler) they can pop someone's head off quite quickly.
powers: Tyler is a certified instructor in Krav Maga hand-to-hand combat defense. He has an uncanny accuracy with his sig and all other small arms, in addition to being dead eye with anything resembling a throwing knife.
In addition to all of that, Tyler either has exceptional, and purely instinctive, understanding of kinetics. He is virtually able to predict how any remotely humanoid creature will attempt to attack him. This allows him to evade and counter with a great deal of success against much faster opponents, which is nearly every demon/vamp in this ugly world.

Ryan Michaels was the human name of the vampire Bereaver who featured slightly in the begining of Season One. Ryan Michaels/Bereaver was the PC of Ben before he left the game.

descript: I am the best slayer the world has ever known,including Buffy. I am very strong and athletic and no one is a match against me. I have many friends which is unusual in a slayer's life actually it was unheard of until Buffy came along.
history: I was born on July 24 1984 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. My father was killed when he was attacked by a group of Vampires, but it was said to be only of a neck wound. I was 10 years when I found out about my future destiny as a Slayer. I started meeting my watcher any time I was free to practice my fighting and combat skills. I got very good very fast one might say I was a natural. At age 14 I was called into my destiny as the active slayer, I am now 18 and have stopped at least 6 Apocalypses and killed many big bads. I am feared by many if not all where I live. I have a few friends that know my true Identity and help when they can but I mostly do things on my own so they don't get in any danger. I also know some magic and I am still working on getting better at it I can do a few things that help with my duties as the Slayer, I am the first Slayer to become a witch and it has hepled me alot.

I'm not impressed by the background. There's not enough there to get a real sense of the character, howshe'd fit. Plus, it's in first person. Just first person. If the information had been presented as a Watcher Journal entry, or something of the kind, it wouldn't bother me, but as it is it's sort of silly.
I'd turn her down, with invite to try again with more detail.

i'm giving this the thumbs down.
i feel that the character lacks originality and reeks of self-involvement... it sounds like buffy and willow rolled into one, with a unhealthy dose of ego added to the mix. :roll: the profile itself lacks depth... a list of accomplishments rather than a detailed background. (errr... have i mentioned the ego bit already?) :P
finally, i somehow get the impression that the player (shalimar) is a little stand-offish. don't ask me why... there's just something about her character profile that tells me she's not looking to be part of our happy little labn family.

She should have, if she wants to join, at least read a few of the other players profiles. It does not look like she has done that.
I can see why someone would want to be all powerful but it does make the game a whole lot less fun and harder to write. In the game we currently have I think a more submisive character would be easyer to write for as otherwise ther will be character clashes.
I suggest she read other peoples profiles for ideas on how to set out her character submision and then try again (maybe even look at taking up one of Maia's player).
No slayers! Well, not as players anyway. Npc slayers are a maybe.

Yeah, this sounds like a bit too much ego for a healthy game relationship. I have to say no too.
