BACKGROUND:
Growing up in Louisiana, Joshua Dupree was the only child of a man and woman in Baton Rouge. His mother and father ran a family restaurant in the busy city, with a reputation for fine food at good prices. They weren’t gourmets, but they provided their customers with a place that felt like home, and they knew something about every person that walked into their restaurant, or if not, they made it their business to find something out. Joshua loved to be at the restaurant as a child. He would stand beside his mother and father while they cooked and laughed and argued loudly even before he was tall enough to see over the top of the counter. When he could reach, they began to teach him. Joshua grew up learning all about the freshest seafood and the perfect spices for a truly divine gumbo. He loved to cook, and he loved his parents.

When Joshua was 16 years old, he was taller and broader than most of the boys in his school. He was quiet and slow to rile, and because he was so big, people thought he was slow. Joshua is as bright as the next guy, but in his youth, he gained a certain reputation. People are cruel and short sighted, so many assumed Josh was trouble. Despite that, things were great for him until the restaurant fire. A few weeks before the tragedy, some men came poking around the restaurant. Josh saw them and he realised they were criminals of some sort. When they showed up, it made his parents very angry. Josh heard them arguing with the men, but he didn’t know what was said.

Then the fire happened. Josh knew that the criminals had set it. They had wanted to extort money from his parents. For refusing to pay, the men had burned the restaurant to the ground. Josh was furious. His parents didn’t have the money to rebuild, so they were forced to go out and find jobs in other restaurants. They were very unhappy. Josh fell in with the wrong sort after that. His parents were never around to spend time with him, and he was angry all the time. Eventually, he dropped out of high school and ran off to California. He joined up with a motorcycle gang, the infamous Hell’s Angels. Josh was big, and quiet, and full of rage. He very nearly died because of it. At around 20, Josh was involved in a robbery by the gang in a small California town. His friends got away, but Josh was arrested. He went to prison for almost a year.

In prison, Josh was a bigger target than on the streets. He was full of anger and he was a massive man. If Josh had not met Officer Luke Davies, he might not have made it out alive. But, he did meet the older man, a guard at the penitentiary who recognised something in Josh Dupree. He took Josh under his wing and helped him to get past the anger he had harboured for all those years. Luke helped Josh get his GED and then, when he discovered how much Josh loved it, he helped Josh to start cooking again. By the time Josh got out of prison, he knew what he was going to do. Josh spent the next decade perfecting his craft, travelling around the country and even over to Europe, learning as he went.

Josh is an amazing cook, an artist really. He came back to L.A. hoping to make amends for the mistakes in his past. He took the job at The Bibliophile because there was something about the manager, a pretty red haired girl with sad green eyes, that called out to him. Thanks to that instinct, he is now head chef at a trendy Alhambra shop that is getting rave reviews in the community.
