as is the trend with urs truly, i tend to get into debates on everything...last nite @ work, a most unproductive one where we spent time discussing music cuz we heard on the radio a list of top 10 rock albums that came out recently...this is to say that we were not amused that AMerica's golden boy, Bruce Springsteen, was # 1 with Born to Run...
sooooo...here are my top 10 of all time (eh, include some hard rock/metal...after all, Led Zep and Black Sabbath were precursors to this style)...eat that!
10- Exile on Main Street by Rolling Stones...this album was one of their greatest and showed why they still rocked hard when music was changing in the early 80s...classic: Rocks Off
9- II by Led Zeppelin...their best album, much much better and classier than IV which gets a lot of lists cuz of that annoyingly over-played chick track Stairway to Mars...classic: Whole Lotta Love
8- Definitely Maybe by Oasis...this'll probably irritate a lot of people, but simply put i soooo dig these guys and their attitude on this album, they brought back Brit music in a big way in North America...classic: Live Forever
7- War by U2...Sunday Bloody Sunday, nuff said. Bono bleeds on this one.
6- Ten by Pearl Jam...IMO, they carried the grunge phase of the 90s and not Nirvana (one freaking song)...the lyrics on this album really got to me...classic: Black
5- Live Shit: Binge and Purge (Mexico City 1992) by Metallica...wow, totally blown away when i heard this...this live album is too great for metal fans to pass up...loud and raw, the guitars and drums are insane, taking crude album tracks and perfecting them with an energy that u cant capture on a disc, plus, the whole album is chockfull of solos that r air guitar material :P ...classic: Creeping Death
4- Joshua Tree by U2...hehehe, not a whole lot needs to be said about this one...almost everyone knows @ least one song from this...classic: Mothers of the Disappeared
3- Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin...totally loved this album, the one i listen to the most by them...the riffs on this album are aplenty and really catchy (the type u hum and play air guitar too in the car)...classic: Kashmir
2- Abbey Road by the Beatles...im not a fan of their earlier work, but this album is so sad and the last album of a fantastic group (minus the I wanna hold ur hands days), every song can be classified as a hit, e.g. Something, Mean Mr. Mustard...classic: Come Together
1- Achtung Baby by U2...yeah, yeah, this is a personal fave, hence MY fave list, but hear me out on this...not only does this kick Joshua Tree's ass, but it reinvented the rock that we listen to today...everyone started experimenting cuz of these guys and nothing ever came as close to this album...every single song is a freaking classic (Until The End of the World, Ultraviolet, One, The Fly, Even Better Than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways)...theres too much on this album that i dont find on any other one, e.g. Bono's range in voices (he doesnt use the same voice on more than one song), the Edge's wicked cool guitars (come on, listen to The Fly), and the lyrics are so sad and emotional (in a good way)...classic: Until The End of The World

Hybrid Theory and Meteroa - Linkin Park. Absaloutely Awesome. Reanimation ain't too bad either, but not as good imo.

A Wonderful World - Tony Bennett and K.D. Lang. A tribute to Louie Armstrong. Very excellent.
My Way - Frank Sinatra. Let's face it, My Way is the quintessential song of Frank and all Leos.
Best of the Capitol Years - Frank Sinatra. Doesn't have My Way, but it does have Witchcraft and I've Got the World on a String. Lots of good ballads.
Day Without Rain - Enya. Short, but extremely high quality. Buy it now.
Music of the Crusades - Some nice music in here. I am rather fond of Walther's Palastienalied.
????? - I have to relocate this CD, but it's more early music. Contains the song, Bel mes chiar (SP?)
And that's all I can remember for right now. :)
Top Ten Albums of All Time
Like Matt, I'm not sure I could list my favourite albums in order (and I am sure to miss some out anyway) plus I am always finding something new that I just love. Here are my current Top Ten, again, in no particular order -
1) "Fallen" by Evanescence - the first time I heard "Bring Me To Life" on the radio I knew I had to get this album, having heard it there isn't a song that I don't love. Perfect if you're in a brooding mood ;)
2) "Origin of Symmetry" by Muse - this is such a great album despite what critics have said about Muse you can't fault them when it comes to creating a stand-out track. Bliss is probably the most well known but other tracks such as New Born and Space Dementia show just what a great range this band is capable of.
3) "Parts of the Process" by Morcheeba - I don't know why people seem to hate 'best of...' compilations so much. I have to say this album has all my favourite Morcheeba tracks such as The Sea, What's Your Name, Be Yourself and Over and Over. Morcheeba is such a fantastically original Brit Band and this album perfectly encapsulates the unique, elclectic sound that they've managed to cultivate.
4) "Dummy" by Portishead - the haunting vocals on this album are enough to make this one of my all-time faves. The songs seem to literally melt into one another making it the perfect chill out album.
5) "Play" by Moby - Moby seems to have such a talent for making classic records such as Porcelain, Find My Baby and Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? all of which are included on this album. The music is both techno and gospel, ambient and soulful meaning that there is a song on this album to fit whatever mood you're in.
6) "Gorillaz" by Gorillaz - created by Blur's Damon Alburn I can't help feeling that this album shows more originality than any of the Blur albums put together. It has a really funky and quirky feel, the lyrics both are increadibly witty and silly ("I ain't happy, feeling sad, I got sunshine in a bag"). My fav tracks are Latin Simone, Re-Hash, 5/4 and Slow Country.
7) "OK Computer" by Radiohead - this has to be one of my favourite Radiohead albums of all time. Every song is one to fall in love with the lyrics themselves are increadibly beautiful but it's the vocals of Ed O'brien and Yorke that really make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Listen to - Paranoid Android, Exit Music (for a film), Karma Police and The Tourist.
8 "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones - this was a total surprise for me, but perfect for relaxing on a Sunday evening. I don't think i have a favourite song, though her cover of Hoagy Carmichael's 'The Nearness of You' comes pretty close.
9) "U2 The Best of 1990-2000" by U2 - I don't care what people say, compilation albums rock when you don't have the £££ to buy the original releases. Like Ric I'm a big U2 fan (With Or Without You??) This album has practically every hit that made this band such a sensation including Even Better Than the Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, Stuck In a Moment, The Fly, Until the End of the World.... I could really just stick the play list up here. Every one is Fabu.
10) Argh... last one... "Aqualung" by Aqualung - the debut album from this little known band. Songs such as Just for a Moment and Gentle have a poetic beauty and melencholic desolation that I've yet to see matched. Strange and Beautiful people might remember from the Beetle tv commercial, it barely scratches the surface of this amazingly gentle and intricate album.
Phew! Done! And I'm sure there are loads I've missed out including Travis and Coldplay who didn't make my final cut (mostly because of Muse and Radiohead who just pipped them to the post).

OOooohhhh, Kieran!!! GREAT thread.
And as I recount my choices, I see just how Old School I really am. You whippersnappers!! Now, this is when music was music!! These are the albums I could not do without.
1. Hissing of Summer Lawns-Joni Mitchell. Joni’s first big foray into other styles of music. I’ve sung the title song at auditions and wowed ‘em. Jazzy and experimental. Joni’s voice is just changing from the winsome CSN fodder into a woman’s voice. She’s not afraid to sing off-key a note or two to make her point. Nobody turns words around a concept better than Joni. Favorite Song: Edith and the Kingpin.
2. Songs in the Key of Life-Stevie Wonder. I used to play this (in LP format) in college until I wore the groove out. Musically, no one could touch Stevie back in the day. This was a triumph that I don’t believe he ever was able to out do. Favorite Song: Ordinary Pain.
3. Yellow Brick Road-Elton John. I know every word to every song on this. Second only to Joni, Elton and Bernie Taupin are master songwriters. Listen to the backgrounds. The band’s harmonies are flawless – as evidenced by “Harmony.” Favorite Song: Every one’s as good as the next.
4. Joshua Judge Ruth-Lyle Lovett. The last of the great Texas country soul singers. Lyle has a voice that doesn’t seem like it’d come out of that askew face, but when it does, it’s so sweet it can make you shiver. Clear and true and his band and singers know that gospel can glorify every kind of music, even redneck shitkicker twang. Favorite Song: Since the Last Time.
5. It’s Your World-Gil Scott-Heron with Brian Jackson. This man was the second rapper. The first was The Last Poets. Both groups were doing spoken word over music long before Tupac or Biggie. Gil’s voice is rough without tearing away skin. He and Brian, though not the best vocalists in the world, fashion songs that fit them. His band is are the kind of local musicians you’d see and hear out in the streets in Brooklyn on a hot August night. Favorite Song: The Bottle
6. Aja-Steely Dan. This is one of those either you get it or you don’t albums – anything by the cryptic-unless-you’re-in-the-desert-doing-mushrooms studio band. But it never mattered to me that I didn’t get it. This album was just so COOOOL. Favorite Song: Home At Last.
7. The Very Best of Tower of Power-Tower of Power. The horn section of this Oakland staple band was on just about every album you could pick up from the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Lenny Williams’ voice fit the band perfectly, but they had a few other vocalists who were serviceable. Favorite Song: What is Hip?
8. Sweet Honey in the Rock Live at Carnegie Hall-Sweet Honey in the Rock. This is the group I fancy my singing group takes after. Those at the Cast Party heard me sing a song from this. Singing gospel, spirituals, jazz, these are a capella female voices that use themselves as instruments; enough so that you don’t miss musical instruments. They sing in about 10 part harmony. Favorite Song: Are My Hands Clean?
9. New Favorite-Alison Krauss (with Union Station). Bluegrass the way it’s supposed to be; clear, sweet, true and heartbreaking. Alison’s voice is like a pitch pipe. It’s never off. Favorite Song: Crazy Faith
10. Stripped-Christina Aguilera. Mock me if you will, but this girl has the best pipes in the business and when she doesn’t have to show off (as witnessed by her dismal performance at the MTV Music Awards), her ability to capture a note’s meaning is uncanny. She, too, is never off pitch. The songs she wrote for this album are all over the place as far as style goes. I kept this in my car CD player for months and gave it away to everyone as gifts. I have converted many.
Honorable mentions: Fallen/Evanescence, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots/The Flaming Lips, Kiko/Los Lobos, Just Another Band from East LA/Los Lobos, Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderly (self titled), Infinite Possibilities/Amel Larrieux, Anything Album at All by Incubus.

The Immaculate Collection (Madonna): I think this is the greatest CD of all time (so it is my number one lol)
History: Past Present Future (Michael Jackson) : A ton of his greatest hits before be became wacko jacko....
Stripped (Christina Aguilera): This CD is amazing. I totally agree with Sherlynn on this one (except that her performance was NOT dismal, it was the single greatest moment of my life lol)
Stronger (Britney Spears): remember no laughing. Im sorry but this CD is really good. can you all say "Lucky" which is like one of the best pop songs ever. All you Britney haters piss off :P
Justified (Justin Timberlake): Could he be any more slick
No Strings Attached (Nsync) So much better then their other stuff.
Woah Nelly (Nelly Furtado): This girl is so great. Her stuff is really original.
Sun Factory 3 (MC Mario): Really good Dance Music
Cruel Intentions Soundtrack (Various Artists): that movie had awsome music.
Well the rest, I cant really think of any SUPER albums that I like. Those were the ones I thought of the quickest.

Ok, I am either old or just completely different from you all. Anyway...
Rod Stewart - Unplugged and Seated: Ok, so this is an acoustic compilation album, but I don't care. It collects all of my favorite Rod Stewart hits, and I really, really love Rod Stewart. Classic: "Maggie May."
Elvis - Elvis 30 #1 Hits: Call me a redneck princess, I don't care. I am a huge, ridiculous Elvis fan. (Ok, no black velvet pictures on my wall) He had a voice like an angel, and he wasn't hard on the eyes either. Elvis is an icon, a legend, and this album celebrates that in all it's effulgent glory. Classic: What are you kidding me? Pick one. My all time favorite is "Can't Help Falling in Love with You."
Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell: This was my first introduction to Meatloaf's music, and I have to say that no other artist has ever been as important to me. Meatloaf is a god. No question. Classic: "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)"
Janis Joplin - Essential Janis Joplin: This is a remastered two disc set of Joplin songs. It's got all the greats on it. Classic: "Me and Bobby McGee."
Madonna - The Immaculate Collection: Maybe I'm a child of my time, but I really love Madonna. Especially older Madonna, you know. "Like a Virgin" and "Get into the Groove" are such great, fun, cool songs. Classic: "Like a Prayer."
Halfway there. This is getting harder.
Garth Brooks - Double Live: Here's my inner redneck coming out. I'm a long time country girl at heart, and Garth is the King. He recorded parts of Double Live while he was here, so I have to love it even more. Classic: "The Dance."
Soundtrack - Original Dirty Dancing Soundtrack: Look this film was part of my high school identity. I saw it a million times. My girlfriends and I watched it so often we could quote it line for line. Classic: "Love is Strange" by Mickey and Sylvia.
Phil Vassar - Phil Vassar: You probably have no idea who this is, but I love Phil Vassar. He's my Garth replacement since the King retired. Vassar is a songwriter who took the plunge and started singing his own stuff a few years ago. He wrote country hits like "I'm Alright" for Joe Dee Messina and "Little Red Rodeo" for Collin Raye. Classic: "Carlene."
The Refreshments - The Bottle and Fresh Horses: This was a great band, emphasis on was, since they've long been broken up. Their music was cool and different. Classic: "Fonder and Blonder."
Soundtrack - Sing the Musical: Again, none of you has probably ever heard of this movie, let alone this soundtrack, but I love it. It's fun and poignant. Classic: "One More Time."
Ok, my tastes are...eclectic, to say the least.

I'd forgotten about Madonna. My favorite of hers is Bedtime Stories which included the best notes she ever carried.
And the King of Pop used to be the most cutting edge artist there was. My favorite of his is Bad -- the one with Smooth Criminal (that Alien Ant Farm completely ripped off wonderfully).
I also forgot about all of the Rufus and Chaka Kahn's albums. You can tell I'm into vocalists and Chaka is the queen.
Don't be ashamed for liking what you like. I agree that Elvis had a beautiful voice (I was in Nashville when he died -- all of Tennessee stopped -- it was like 9/11).
