BBC plot for budding writersBudding writers will have the chance to complete a short story by a group of best-selling authors in a new BBC initiative.
Diaries of Adrian Mole author Sue Townsend, author of the Rebus novels Ian Rankin, Chocolat author Joanne Harris and comic Alexei Sayle are some of the novelists who will pen the first half of a short story for digital channel BBC3.
Their work will be published in a pamphlet which will be distributed across coffee shops, libraries, and on the Internet next month.
Readers will then have about six weeks to attempt to complete the tale.
The eight winning stories - judged by the likes of author Muriel Gray and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah - will be showcased on BBC3 in the autumn, and some will be broadcast on Radio 4.
BBC3 controller Stuart Murphy said the channel wanted to uncover the next generation of writing talent across the UK.
He said: "This project is very exciting for anyone who has read a book and thought they could do better.
"With the stories covering a variety of genres there's something to suit everyone's style of writing.
"This series could change the path of some people's lives for ever.
"We hope it is one of the programmes which unquestionably sets BBC3 apart from other channels in this marketplace."
Keep an eye out for these fliers and such. I think our UK writers are talented enough to enter.

BBC Writing Contest
I may be wrong but I think that may be part of the BBC Talent promotion on at the moment. They're running a series of competitions amongst those are one for Sitcom Writers and another for Screenplays - I think. They look pretty cool and the prizes are well worth winning (though the deadlines are in a month - not long if you're working a treatment for a script). You can check it out here -
